Capital Cities Game: Learn World Capitals Fast

June 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Can you name the capital of Brazil? What about Mongolia? If you said Brasília and Ulaanbaatar, you're off to a great start. Capital cities can be tricky — some share names with their country (like Luxembourg) while others seem completely unrelated (like Canberra for Australia).

Memory Tricks for Tricky Capitals

Canberra (Australia)

Most people guess Sydney or Melbourne (the biggest cities). The trick: think "Can-bear-a" — a bear carrying a can in the Australian outback.

Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia)

"You-lawn-bat-ter" — imagine a giant bat playing tennis on a lawn in Mongolia. The weirder the image, the better it sticks!

Ngerulmud (Palau)

One of the hardest capitals in the world. Break it down: "Ner-gull-mud" — a seagull covered in mud on a Pacific island.

Brasília (Brazil)

Not Rio! Brasília was built from scratch in the 1960s and designed like an airplane from above. Remember: "Brazil + Silvia" — imagine a woman named Silvia flying a plane-shaped city.

Capitals by Region: A Learning Strategy

Instead of jumping around randomly, learn capitals grouped by region:

  1. North America — Only 3 countries, very easy (Washington DC, Ottawa, Mexico City)
  2. South America — 12 countries, most are easy to guess (Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires)
  3. Europe — 44 countries but many are well-known (Paris, London, Berlin, Rome)
  4. Asia — 48 countries, getting harder (Tokyo, Beijing, New Delhi are easy; Ashgabat and Bishkek are hard)
  5. Africa — 54 countries, the hardest continent for capitals
  6. Oceania — 14 countries, many with tiny island capitals
